6.4 Powerstroke or gas burner?

6.4. Over fueled a cylinder, bucked a rocker arm which before it fell off over opened exhaust valves that then smacked into the piston and bent the pushrod. Also over fueling whipped out the cross hatch on that cylinder and shortened its connecting rod. 6.4s take themselves out in a grand fashion.

So if you were forced to choose, 6.0 or 6.4 lol?

7.3 lol. But seriously the 6.0 did have its head gasket/egr system/oil cooler issues but they don't have the same tendency to self annihilate like the 6.4s do. I've done plenty of cab off head gaskets on the 6.0 but having a hard time remembering the last enigne I actually replaced. Plus the 6.4 is a pain in the ass to get to everything on the engine, hence cab off for a lot of stuff. You even have to remove all the cab bolts on the pass side and jack up the cab just to remove the turbo up pipes, so lame.

From everything I've heard, the 6.0 is actually a pretty good engine once the headgaskets/studs/egr has been dealt with, is that true?

Yeah the factory tq to yeild head bolts are the weak link, (Basically they are intentionally stretchy head bolts), also in the northern states you see rusted vg turbos over boosting blowing head gaskets. Studing the heads take care of that.

The egr system, and oil cooler issues can be warded off with cetane booster/aggressive driving and proper maintenance respectively. Most diesel (in the us) has the wrong cetane rating causing excess carbon/the aggressiveness is blowing the carbon out of intake and egr valve, and maintenance ecpecialy of the coolant is pretty critical with the type of coolant used, it like to eat through metal when it ages.

Some people delete the egr system, and remote mount the oil cooler but I've never really dealt with them that much being a dealership guy, but I hear good things.

That's good to hear, because since they are pretty cheap for a diesel, I am strongly considering one on down the line.

Yeah, unfortunately some times the way they assemble a vehicle on a production line forces you to work on it like your disassembling on a production line. That does not look like fun doing that on a floor though.
